Settle Prep has no adverts and doesn't sell or share personal data. This page explains what we collect, why, and who processes it.
The speaking check
When you take the speaking check, your browser records your answers and sends them to us one answer at a time.
- Your voice is turned into text by OpenAI (speech-to-text). The examiner's voice is also made by OpenAI (text-to-speech).
- The text of your answers is read by Anthropic's Claude, which writes the examiner's follow-up questions and the feedback report.
- We don't keep recordings. Audio is used for the transcript and then discarded.
- We keep the transcript, the timings of your words and your report for up to 30 days, so the report can be shown to you and so we can fix problems. Then they are deleted.
- To limit how many checks one person can take in a day, we store a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address, never the address itself, and your country.
- Before a check starts, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a real browser is asking, so automated programs can't use up the free checks. It looks at signals from your browser and doesn't set advertising cookies.
- OpenAI and Anthropic process this under their API terms, which by default don't use it to train their models.
The speaking check is for adults (18 and over). Its result is a practice estimate, not an official result.
Emails
If you sign up for updates, we store your email address and a few details about the visit: the page you signed up on, the first page of your visit and the site that sent you there, your country (from our host, Cloudflare), and your browser type and language. We use it to send updates about the English test rules and Settle Prep, and to see which pages people sign up from. To be removed, use the unsubscribe link in any email or write to hello@settleprep.co.uk.
Link clicks
When you click a link that leaves this site (for example to GOV.UK), your browser tells our own database which link it was, the page it was on, the referring site, your country and your browser type. We don't store your IP address.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. It sets cookies and records things like the page, the referring site, rough location and device type. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. You can block it with a tracker blocker or Google's opt-out add-on.
Hosting
The site is served by Cloudflare, which processes basic request data (such as IP address) to deliver pages and stop abuse.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by writing to hello@settleprep.co.uk.
