Choose your practice
- B1 practice (about 3 minutes): everyday questions in the style of the B1 speaking and listening tests, and a moment to ask the examiner a question. It is modelled on the one-to-one format of tests such as GESE Grade 5.
- B2 practice (about 4 minutes): a topic you lead, a short task where you ask the questions and keep the conversation going, and one conversation subject. It is modelled on the published format of GESE Grade 7.
You choose which one. We can't tell you which level your application needs. See B2 English for ILR, GOV.UK, or a regulated adviser.
Both checks are shorter than the real tests: the real GESE Grade 5 takes 10 minutes and the announced Grade 7 takes 15.
How it works
-
Choose B1 or B2 practice
Pick the level you want to practise.
-
Read the notice, then allow your microphone
Before the microphone opens, we show what happens to your voice. Your browser then asks for permission.
-
Listen to the examiner
The examiner is an AI. It asks each question out loud. You can ask it to repeat a question.
-
Answer out loud
Speak as you would in the test: full answers, reasons, examples. When the format asks you to, ask the examiner a question.
-
Read your report
A practice estimate of your level, a check against the test format, up to three things to work on with a clearer way to say them, and the words you said.
What the estimate is, and what it isn't
- It's a practice estimate from software, not an official result. Only an approved test provider can give you a real result.
- It looks at the range of words and grammar you use, how accurate they are, how smoothly you speak, how you keep the conversation going, and how clearly your ideas link together.
- It can be wrong, especially with background noise or a weak microphone. A real examiner may grade you differently.
- It doesn't predict the result of a real test.
Your voice and your data
- Before your microphone opens, we tell you what happens next. The microphone listens only while you answer.
- Recordings are not kept. Your speech is turned into text, and the audio is then discarded.
- The text is kept for up to 30 days, so we can show your report and fix problems. Then it is deleted.
- The services we use are named on our privacy page: OpenAI for speech-to-text and the examiner's voice, and Anthropic for the examiner and the feedback.
- Keep private details out. Please don't say your full name, address, passport or visa number. The check is for adults (18 and over).

Our guides explain each format in plain English:

- GESE Grade 7 (B2): what happens in the exam

Common questions
Is this practice test free?
Yes. The speaking check is free. To keep it free for everyone, there is a daily limit on how many checks one person can take.
Is this the real B1 or B2 test?
No. It's practice in the style of the published one-to-one formats, and shorter than the real tests. Real tests are booked with an approved provider. See English tests for ILR and citizenship.
Will this tell me if I'll pass?
No. It gives a practice estimate and things to work on. Only the real test gives a result, and a real examiner may grade you differently.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It runs in your web browser, on a phone or a computer with a microphone. If you open it inside another app, such as Instagram or Facebook, open it in Safari or Chrome instead.
Is my recording saved?
No. Recordings are not kept: your answer is turned into text, and the audio is then discarded. We keep the text for up to 30 days, then delete it. Privacy
Which level should I practise, B1 or B2?
That depends on your application, and we can't advise on it. In general, the rules ask for B2 for most ILR applications made on or after 26 March 2027, and B1 before that date and for citizenship. Check GOV.UK or find a regulated adviser.
